Each character is also interesting, with fleshed out backstories that the Luminary learns about as he continues on his journey with them. The monsters are as fantastical as their lands, although many will still feel familiar to JRPG fans. Each land has its own theme, along with unique monsters that the Luminary and his friends must face. Erdrea is a beautifully thought-out and detailed world, with cities inspired by the real world (such as the Venice-like Gondolia) and fantasy (such as the underwater mermaid kingdom). It's the setting and story, though, where Dragon Quest XI excels. This slower method of travel gives the player a chance to fully immerse into the fantasy, as well as grind to continue to level up. It's highly recommended, though, that players spend more time traversing Erdrea the hard way: by foot, horseback or ship. The "Zoom" function is nice, which offers a fast travel option to places the Luminary previously visited. Each character has a specific set of skills that they are automatically good at, but skill trees allow the player to determine which particular skillsets each character should focus on: this is determined by spending skill points.Ĭhurches, or save points, are scattered throughout the world, making it easy not to lose progress. Boss fights are still challenging, though, but not to the point of frustrating players. As this is a JRPG, grinding is essential, because leveling up is the only way the Luminary and his friends will beat the next boss fight. Players can choose to control every character in their party, or they can just control the Luminary and let an AI figure out how best to use other characters in fights. The side missions also give the Luminary a chance to get to know the people of each of Erdrea's lands, as well as give him an opportunity to learn more about their culture, hopes and dreams.ĭragon Quest XI's turn-based combat is also straightforward. There are also side missions, which offer the Luminary a chance to help out others for additional items. Completing missions earns items and skill points and progresses the story a little further. The primary mission is broken down into smaller tasks, each which will lead the Luminary closer to his primary goal.

25 years later, the album is still as nourishing as "a heaping helping of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and collard greens." -Jewel Wicker A foundational part of Atlanta's extensive and ongoing rap legacy, Goodie Mob's debut provided a counter narrative to the city's standing as a "Black Mecca" and, combined with OutKast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, helped show that the South could provide consciousness in addition to the booty bass it had come to be known for. On "Free," the opening track that evokes the memory of negro spirituals, CeeLo longs for an escape from opression on "Live at the O.M.N.I.," the group flips the title of a former entertainment hub in Atlanta into an acronym about mass incarceration, while Khujo's reference to the "trap," on "Thought Process," is often considered one of the genre's first uses of the term on record. The rappers weren't afraid to call out the violence of former Atlanta drug unit the Red Dogs or former President Bill Clinton (referring to him as Bill Clampett, a reference to the Beverly Hillbillies character Jed Clampett). Atlanta was largely benefiting from its status as "The City Too Busy To Hate" (they'd go on to host the Olympics one year after Soul Food was released), but Goodie Mob spoke for the Black residents who were surviving off the scraps leftover by the white and Black elite. Released at a time when Atlanta was still fighting to prove that the city, and the South, had something to contribute to hip-hop, Soul Food stood as an example of the consciousness the region was capable of. On their debut album, Goodie Mob took the term "soul food" and transformed it into a metaphor for the experiences of the working class in the "Dirty South." Today, those dishes are an integral part of the broader American palate, as is Southern hip-hop. Soul food is a quintessential element of African-American culture, standing as an example of the way enslaved Africans took the scraps they were given and nourished their families. "Who's that peeking in my window? POW! Nobody now!" they chant, putting the industry on notice and calling fans - and all Southern rappers after them - to come correct and join the front lines. The peerless production of Organized Noize (Rico Wade, Sleepy Brown and Ray Murray) and the spiritual force of their Dungeon Family (iconoclast duo OutKast, rappers Killer Mike and Big Rube, funk singer Joi and others) propel these foot soldiers to stand guard, glocks cocked and ready to take aim at any enemies, one verse at a time. And so begins the debut song from four survivors of the so-called war on drugs, who at once detail Black folks' complicity in trafficking, abuse and glorification of illicit crime, declaim any confidence in governmental intervention and refuse to succumb to imminent doom and gloom on the hallowed ground they would famously dub "the Dirty South." In fact, as CeeLo Green, T-Mo and Big Gipp join the phantasmagoria with confessions and observations, they dare to weave a host of Orwellian conspiracy theories for a class-stratified nation too busy to care, decrying the nightmarish corruption and surveillance, historical and present day, that's dependent upon Black communities' implosion and self-destruction. Holle'n they got rank." Surely, not even Scorsese and his whitewashed Taxi Driver lens could make Goodie Mob founding member Khujo's vision any less horrific. Reporting to you live from "the traps" of "the city too busy to hate," a voice, like buckshot, breaks the ragged silence, only to unsettle you further with 28 words so at war with the 16 counts they fall within that you know you'll never see Atlanta's longtime slogan or hear Southern hip-hop the same again: "When. or even a Miami Beach rumpshakin' set with Uncle Luke. Then the keys add an even lower D and A pattern in the mix with an unassuming drum-and-bass line that lets you know you're not in Hollywood on Elm Street the Bronx projects riot-riven, post- Boyz n the Hood South Central L.A. A psychedelic guitar lick frets, no, chokes a note for five supple seconds to trip you out, seeming to signal that Jimi Hendrix and Freddy Krueger are back from the dead, the latter surely to shank you. Challenges still facing membrane-based potable reuse applications, including chemical and biological contaminant removal, membrane fouling, and public perception, are highlighted as areas in need of further research and development.ĭwindling water supplies and growing populations have made planned potable reuse an increasingly important component of water resource management for many urban areas around the world. Key trends in membrane technology include novel configurations, materials and fouling prevention techniques. Beyond membranes themselves, this review covers the background and history of potable reuse, and commonly used potable reuse process chains, pretreatment steps, and advanced oxidation processes. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary of the role of polymeric membranes in the treatment of wastewater to potable water quality and highlight recent advancements in separation processes. Advancements in membrane technology including new membrane materials, coatings, and manufacturing methods, as well as emerging membrane processes such as membrane bioreactors, electrodialysis, and forward osmosis have been developed to improve selectivity, energy consumption, fouling resistance, and/or capital cost. Membrane properties, including pore size, wettability, surface charge, roughness, thermal resistance, chemical stability, permeability, thickness and mechanical strength, vary between membranes and applications. Typically, potable reuse treatment plants use polymeric membranes for microfiltration or ultrafiltration in conjunction with reverse osmosis and, in some cases, nanofiltration. A variety of membranes have been developed that can remove water contaminants ranging from particles and pathogens to dissolved organic compounds and salts. Although public perception can be a challenge, potable reuse is often the least energy-intensive method of providing additional drinking water to water stressed regions. Recent advancements in membrane technology have allowed for the reclamation of municipal wastewater for the production of drinking water, i.e., potable reuse. Conventional water resources in many regions are insufficient to meet the water needs of growing populations, thus reuse is gaining acceptance as a method of water supply augmentation. The point is, it’s true of any orchestral library, even the most expensive ones. That often means using some faders to record automation or a lot of tweaking afterward. Other times, the note isn’t so convincing alone, but it’s spot on when layered with other instruments.Īrticulation is another essential factor if you want to play realistic lines or even solos. What I would add is that with orchestral plugins, much of the authenticity comes from context.įor example, you might hold a single legato note, and it could sound realistic. As well as the six articulations, there are three voice modes, including polyphonic, monophonic, and legato. It has six articulations, which are arco vibrato, arco non-vibrato, pizzicato vibrato, pizzicato non-vibrato, spiccato, and tremolo. If you would like to take the metro it will bring you to the center. Depending on how long you stay parking can range from $2-$15. You can always visit the visitors center for a one-hour validation without having to purchase anything. Several of the parking lots in the nearby areas will only let you park for a certain amount of time and are not much cheaper. However, it is the closest parking lot so I typically wind up parking here anyways. The Hollywood & Highland center is one of the most visited places in Los Angeles. This shopping and entertainment center is so much more than just an outdoor mall. In the heart of Tinseltown, you will find the Hollywood and Highland Center. The boba arms race escalated dramatically over the last decade - especially since Instagram started seeping into Taiwanese culture - and a new breed of shop has begun offering more elaborate drinks with outrageous flavors and virality-primed color combinations. Wherever you are here, if you dig deep enough, you’ll eventually strike boba.Īs the sheer number of boba options reaches critical mass, it’s hard for a boba slinger to stand out. And while the term was once confined to tea shops, you’ll find throughout Taiwan that the boba trend is now being incorporated into desserts, sandwiches, cocktails, and even skincare. There are now more than 21,000 boba shops in Taiwan, with thousands more around the world - many belonging to successful international chains like CoCo Fresh Tea & Juice (都可), Gong Cha, and Sharetea. The pearls can be fat as marbles, small as peas, square-shaped, red, or even crystal clear. Milks can range from whole and skim to nondairy substitutes like almond and coconut - or often there’s no milk (or milk-like product) at all, as in the case of cold tea-infused or juice-based drinks. Since its beginnings, the basic tapioca iced tea recipe has evolved into an entire genre of drinks. The one thing that everybody agrees upon is that the name “boba” is a reference to the 1980s Hong Kong sex symbol Amy Yip, whose nickname, “Boba,” is also a Chinese slang term for her most famous pair of physical assets.Īn employee fills a cup at TopQ in Banqiao, Taipei There are rival origin myths, too: One credits Hanlin Tea Room (翰林茶館), a tea shop in Tainan. A few years later, the company’s product manager, Lin Hsiu Hui, plopped some tapioca balls into her iced tea at a staff meeting, and the rest, apparently, is beverage history. But the two weren’t combined until, as one version of the story goes, Liu Han Chieh began serving cold tea at his Taichung tea shop, Chun Shui Tang (春水堂人文茶館), sometime in the early ’80s. Prior to the 1980s, Q-rich tapioca balls were a common topping for desserts like the ubiquitous heaps of snow-like shaved ice found throughout Taiwan, while milk tea was already a favorite local drink. Like the Italian notion of al dente, Q is difficult to master and hard to capture - boba with the right Q factor isn’t too soft or too bouncy, but has just the right amount of toothiness. Indeed, the quality of boba drinks is measured by how much Q power lurks within the tapioca pearls. It’s also key to the texture of mochi, fish balls, and noodles. Look around and you’ll see the Q plastered prominently on food packaging and affixed to shop signs. Known locally as Q or QQ (as in, very Q), the untranslatable bouncy, rubbery, chewy consistency is treasured in Taiwan. It’s that addictive texture that’s become the boba signature. Tapioca pearls start white, hard, and rather tasteless, and then are boiled inside huge, bubbling vats and steeped in sugary caramelized syrup for hours, until eventually they’re transformed into those black, springy tapioca pearls we’ve come to know and slurp.Ĭustom bubble tea holders are a staple in Taipei The pearls are made from tapioca starch, an extract of the South American cassava plant, which came to Taiwan from Brazil via Southeast Asia during the period of Japanese rule between 18. ( In the U.S., the East Coast favors bubble tea, while the West prefers boba.) Whatever you call it, in its most basic form, the drink consists of black tea, milk, ice, and chewy tapioca pearls, all shaken together like a martini and served with that famously fat straw to accommodate the marbles of tapioca that cluster at the bottom of the cup. Boba tea, bubble tea, and pearl milk tea - in Taiwan, zhenzhu naicha (珍珠奶茶) - are essentially different names for the same thing the monikers differ by location, but also personal preference. The word “boba” can refer to either a broad category of chunky drinks - including everything from iced tea with tapioca pearls to fresh juice loaded with fruity bits - or black tapioca pearls themselves. |
